Scotch Watch VII : Glenlivet 12

Hello! Remember me? Remember this game?

No?! Damn. Well, whatever.

There's a certain irony in this particular scotch review, and it's not because it's been over a year (seriously? how did that happen?) since the last Scotch Watch. Y'see, this particular bottle is not new to me, though I must admit, drinking it out of actual glass and not under 30 degree heat is a novelty. This particular bottle is a favourite of my masters ultimate team, and is offered up as a spirit prize to opponents when we attend tournaments. For the most part, teams are unfamiliar with the spirit, and often they can't handle it in the least. n

There are two added bonuses (boni?) to this edition of Scotch Watch. One is that that, this weekend in particular, I'm missing out on Tequila Con '08 in Philadelphia, PA, an event which could have led to me meeting Jenny and Dustin, among several others.

Lastly, this is the last bottle I will buy before I organize and execute the first Scotch Con event (apologies and thanks to Jenny who can't be here), an event that I'm planning with teammates, friends, and fellow alcoholics enthusiasts to celebrate the tasting of several bottles, and the promise of taking home something new. (Apply within if you're interested!)

On with tonight's tasting...

The review:

Y'know, this might be the first time I've tasted this in a controlled atmosphere (i.e. not panting and sweating on the ultimate field), so it was quite pleasing to taste this bottle. Going in , I knew this was what I call a "reliable" bottle -- I once dated a girl who was a big Glenlivet fan (I won't get into what happened to her) but at the time I didn't know good from bad, but here's my slightly enlightened review. I've tasted several drams right out of the bottle, and a few out of plastic cups, so it's a welcome treat to do so in a controlled atmosphere.

Nose (I never do this): light, sweet, not overly smokey, maybe some hints of orange (?)

Taste: Warm, not overly peaty, solid. Adding an ice cube makes this a great tasting scotch that sits on the mid-edge of the tongue. And no, I don't know what that means.

Afterburn: Nice! No serious lingering on the palate, but a steadily enjoyable taste.

All in all, I'd rate this a 6.5 or 7/10. Honestly, it's more than anybody expects to be given as a gift on the ultimate field, and it's miles better in the comfort of your own house than the cheap stuff (Famous Grouse, Ballantynes, and Teachers, I'm looking at you.).

Definitely stay tuned in the next couple of months for Scotch Con (though I reserve the right to change the name between now and then) -- if it all pans out, there'll be a dozen new bottles to talk about, and with any luck, I'll be in no condition to handle a keyboard and you'll meet a few new, inebriated friends.

Until then...

I'm missing TC08 too. And here I am at home with no booze to speak of. So sad.

I have, however, met both Jenny and Dustin and they are fab.

I would have included you, too, on the missing-out-on-meeting list, but I had already read that you were missing out, too. So sad indeed. I think (?) there's still some Glenlivet left.

Love reading your site! Try to stay sober enough to enlighten the rest of us poor slobs!

This makes my "Cuppa The Day" seem like a pre-school game. Yowza.

The dram? And all I have is the "cuppa"?

Even though you had to call me out on not being an A-lister and all...

;-)

I'm B-List! B! For Booyah!

I've had some caffeine tonight, so that should account for my behavior. I should have had tequila since I missed TC '08, too.

I've memed. (Past tense of meme? Which is, like, not even a WORD so what do I do but conjugate it?)

I'm going to leave the same comment I think I left on the last Scotch Watch (God have I been reading your blog THAT LONG???) Scotch is horrible. How on earth can you drink that crap? Better choice would be to use it to remove dead bugs from the front end of your car.

I have no idea what a dram is. What is a dram? But! I do love the shape and design of that glass you featured.
