A good way to figure out how deep the snow is outside your house is to lean precariously out your sliding patio doors in your house slippers, one foot in the snow and the other still in the house as you attempt to barbecue chicken in the -10C weather. While holding the bowl and barbecue lid in one hand, drop a fully cooked and piping hot chicken breast into the adjacent snow and watch it disappear, leaving only a steaming hole and a reddish, saucy outline as it sinks to the bottom of the snow pile. [Ed note: it's a little like playing Operation, only someone actually gets to eat the retrieved item.]
