Still Hearting Canadian Music

Listening to CBC Radio 3 podcast yesterday(#59: Bagpipes & Banjos) introduced me to three (well, two, since I’d kind of heard of one already) new female vocalists, one “punk” band that I never dreamed existed, and something that nearly defies explanation (so maybe you’ll have to download it and listen for yourselves).

In notepad-memo format (something not nearly as pretty on win2k as on the ibook), I present a little glimpse into my methods of expanding my repertoire. These types of notes are usually found strewn about the house, scribbled on the backs of envelopes, receipts, diapers, government welfare checks...At any rate, I tend to jot down names of people and bands that intrigue me. Usually I follow up on them, and sometimes they're real gems.

And can I just mention how blown away I was by Melissa McClelland’s “Passenger 24”? Amazing.

As for the punk band, Canadians (and fans of old school MuchMusic) will know about Nardwuar the Human Serviette. I learned that he’s actually in a punk band, and one that wrote a song about a rock. Not a rock song; a song Regarding. A. Rock. Also cool.

Lastly, I can’t decide who would like this song more: Ivan Hrvatska’s “Make Love to the World Cup” (Slightly off-topic, since the WC’s been over for weeks now, but I just got around to listening to this Radio 3 podcast. ) If you don't usually dare click on a myspace link, this is the time to break that rule. Seriously, try to resist these lyrics:

"we go to Germany
we play soccer and we party!
and the whole world is looking hot
when we make love to the WORLD CUP!!"

(exclamation points added for emphasis, but I get the feeling this guy's whole lyrics sheet is littered with them.)

If you download the podcast, the female trifecta is first in the hour-long line-up; Nardwuar follows at about 15mins30 seconds mark, and Ivan Hravatska closes the show at the 56:30 mark. Oh, how the iPod makes it easy to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Man, I love CBC Radio 3 sometimes. I won't even get into the great Tegan & Sara interview that surfaces in #60. You should check it out.

Oh, you just never know. A boy can dream. The attraction is definitely there :)
