A Story of Foxes and Parenthood

The Scene: Mid-April, in a seaside Canadian city. It's a rainy day. Two weary parents are driving in a van. They've just left the toddler and the infant with the grandparents, and are heading home to do some cleaning before putting their home on the market. They're visibly stressed, and fatigued from the recent level of interrupted sleep.

They speak little on the way home, enjoying the silence. The radio isn't even on. The only sounds are the hum of the road, and the windshield wipers, set to intermittent. There is no talk of kids. They're feeling strangely free.

Finally, The Lovely Wife breaks the silence:

The Lovely Wife: There's something wrong with those wipers.
Husband: Really? I hadn't noticed. But I don't drive the van very often.

TLW: See? It's really just the one on your side (the driver's side).
H: Ah, yeah. I guess it does streak a little.

Silence.

TLW [deadpan]: Wiper not wiping.

[silence turns to snickering. Snickering builds to uncontrollable laughter]

Nothing more is said for the duration of the trip home. The only sounds are the hum of the road, and periodic giggles.

...

Flashes of comedic brilliance such as this only serve to underscore why I love this woman so.

after 2 years working on Dora the Explorer video games I may be the only person over 7 without a child to get this joke.

Brillant.

That was CUTE. I just found out about this phrase recently (since the youngest child is 11) and it's really sweet.

Great story - came here from Cool Beans, btw. And I offered over there to send you some free coffee. ;-)

Okay, I have two Dora FANATICS in my house, and did I get it? No. Not even after the picture of ye olde Swiper.

Can I blame it on kidlet brain?

Also scootched over from Cool Beans. I really think we need to band together against those Americans leaving us out of everything...

I'm an American, and I don't get it.

Barney: That comment was unrelated to the post. But since you're an American, head to Boca Java and get some free bloggers' coffee! :)

Barney: Or are you saying you don't qualify for free coffee? Cuz that would also suck.
